A vertical scrolling jet shoot them up. Where players can choose from 1 of 3 crafts. Each craft has it's own support mini support crafts.
While shooting their laser, player's can adjust the type of laser they attack with via the Variable Laser System (VALS). This is done by holding or continually pressing one or both of the buttons.
The player can also gain power ups in the form of Power, Max Power, Bomber or Bonus icons.
